The hardworking blacksmith Jones used to work all day in his shop and so hard working was he that at times he would make the sparks fly from his hammer.

The son of Mr. Smith, a rich neighbor, used to come to see the blacksmith everyday and for hours and hours he would enjoy himself watching how the tradesman worked.

"Young man, why don't you try your hand to learn to make shoe tacks, even if it is only to pass the time?" said the blacksmith. "Who knows, one day, it may be of use to you."

The lazy boy began to see what he could do. But after a little practice he found that he was becoming very skilled and soon he was making some of the finest tacks.

Old Mr. Smith died and the son on account of the war lost all his goods. He had to leave home and was forced to take up residence in another country. It so happened that in this village therewere numerous shoemakers who were spending a lot of money to buy tacks for their shoes and even at times when they paid high prices they were not always able to get what they wanted, because inthat part of the country there was a high demand for soldiers' shoes.

Our young Mr. Smith, who was finding it difficult to earn his daily bread, remembered that once upon a time he had learned the art of making tacks and had the sudden idea of making a bargainwith the shoemakers. He told them that he would make the tacks if they would help to get him settled in his workshop. The shoemakers were only too glad of the offer. And after a while, Mr.Smith found that he was soon making the finest tacks in the village.

"How funny it seems," he used to say, "even making tacks can bring a fortune. My trade is more useful to me than were all my former riches."

During the Warring States Period 475-221BC, there was a man called Yue Yangzi in State Yue. One day he saw a piece of gold on the road and picked it up. He took it home and gave it to hiswife. But his wife was not happy. The virtuous woman said, “I hear that a man of morality doesn’t drink a thief’s water and a man of probity refuses to accept alms. What do you think of theaction of picking up another’s lost valuable and possessing it for one’s own?”

Yue Yangzi, feeling ashamed, sent the gold back to where he found it. The next year, Yue Yangzi felt that he should go out and visit scholars to enrich his knowledge. So he set off.

A year later, he came back home suddenly. “Why have you returned?” asked his wife in surprise, “You’ve only spent one year studying with scholars.” “I come back because I missed you verymuch.”

Without saying anything, his wife took a pair of scissors and went to the loom at which she had worked. Pointing at the half done brocade, she proclaimed: “This brocade is woven from thefinest silk. I wove one strand after another to produce the brocade. Now if I cut it, all my previous work will be wasted. It’s the same with your studies. You can acquire knowledge onlythrough diligence. Now, you’ve stopped halfway. Isn’t it the same as cutting the brocade on the loom?”

Yue Yangzi was moved by what she said. He again left home to visit scholars. Several years later he became a learned man.

In the State of Chu, there was a man whose family was very poor. Even at night the often dreamt of striking it rich, but the never worked hard.

One day, when he was leafing through the book Huainan Zi, he came across a line saying:” When the mantis preys on the cicada, it relies entirely upon a leaf to conceal its body.” He thoughtthat if one could get such a leaf, one could become invisible.

Thereupon, he ran into the woods, looking for just such a leaf among the branches. He duanwenw had searched a long time before he discovered a mantis hiding itself behind a leaf andwaiting to catch a cicada. He climbed up the tree at once, and plucked the leaf. But he was in such a big hurry that, out of carelessness. The leaf dropped to the ground. There were many, manyfallen leaves on the ground. How could he identify the leaf he had plucked? So he had to put all the leaves into a bamboo basket and carry them home.

As soon as he got home, he held up one leaf after another in turn to cover his eye, and kept asking his wife:

“Can you see me?”

In the beginning, his wife always answered:” Yes, I can.”

After a long time, she began to feel weird: what was the matter with her husband today? Why did he keep holding up a leaf and asking her the same question?

He did this over and over again for one whole day. In the end, his wife duanwenw got impatient and humoured him by saying:” No, I can’t.”

Hearing this, he became wild with joy. He turned and ran out to the street. Holding the leaf in one hand, he grabbed with the other hand the goods in a shop. But before he could withdraw hishand, he was caught on the spot and handed over to the local yamen.
