I believe honesty is one of the greatest gifts there is. I know they call it a lot of fancy names these days, like integrity and forthrightness. But it doesn’t make any difference what theycall it; it’s still what makes a man a good citizen. This is my code, and I try to live by it.
I’ve been in the taxicab business for thirty-five years, and I know there is a lot about it that is not so good. Taxicab drivers have to be rough and tumble fellows to be able to take it inNew York. You’ve got to be tough to fight the New York traffic eight hours a day, these days. Because taxi drivers are tough, people get the wrong impression that they are bad. Taxi drivers arejust like other people. Most of them will shake down as honest fellows. You read in the papers almost every week where a taxi driver turns in money or jewels or bonds, stuff like that, thatpeople leave in their cabs. If they weren’t honest, you wouldn’t be reading those stories in the papers.
One time in Brooklyn, I found an emerald ring in my cab. I remembered helping a lady with a lot of bundles that day, so I went back to where I had dropped her off. It took me almost two daysto trace her down in order to return her ring to her. I didn’t get as much as “thank you.” Still, I felt good because I had done what was right. I think I felt better than she did.
I was born and raised in Ireland and lived there until I was nineteen years old. I came to this country in 1913 where I held several jobs to earn a few dollars before enlisting in World WarNumber I. After being discharged, I bought my own cab and have owned one ever since. It hasn’t been too easy at times, but my wife takes care of our money and we have a good bit put away for arainy day.
When I first started driving a cab, Park Avenue was mostly a bunch of coal yards. Hoofer’s Brewery was right next to where the Waldorf-Astoria is now. I did pretty well, even in those days.
In all my years of driving a taxicab, I have never had any trouble with the public, not even with drunks. Even if they get a little headstrong once in a while, I just agree with them and thenthey behave themselves.
People ask me about tips. As far as I know, practically everyone will give you something. Come to think of it, most Americans are pretty generous. I always try to be nice to everyone, whetherthey tip or not.I believe in God and try to be a good member of my parish. I try to act toward others like I think God wants me to act. I have been trying this for a long time, and the longer Itry, the easier it gets.

My professional training was in science and engineering. That is a training in the search for truth, and its application to the use of mankind. With a gloss of science we have a continuouscontention from a tribe of atheistic~~ philosophers. That there is an implacable comment between science and religion, in which religion will be vanquished. I do not believe it.
I believe not only that religious faith will be victorious, but that it is vital to mankind that it shall be. We made differ in form and particular in our religious faith. Those are matterswhich are secret to each of our inner sanctuaries, but it is our ~ to the cline to arguer about it.
Their real demonstration is the life that we live. But there is one foundation common to all religious faith. Our discoveries in science have pulled that all the way from the galaxies in theheavens to the constitution of the atom. The universe is controlled by an inflexible law. Somewhere a supreme part created these laws. At some period, man was differentiated from the beasts andwas endowed with a spirit from which bring his/ conscience, idealism and spiritual yearnings.
It is impossible to believe that there is not here a divine touch and the purpose from the creator of the universe. I believe we can express these things only in religious faith. From theirreligious faith, the founding fathers annunciated the most fundamental law of human progress since the sermon on the mount when they stated that man receive from the creator certain inalienablerights and that these rights should be protected from ~ of others by law and justice.
The ~ and atheistic philosophers have thought to declaim progress in terms of materialism alone. But from once came the morals, the spiritual yearnings, the faith, the aspirations to justiceand freedom of mind, which have been the roots our progress always growing societies record their faith in God. Decaying societies lack faith and deny God. But America is not a decayingsociety, it remains strong. It’s faith is in compassion and in God's intelligent mercy.

Throughout the years I’ve seen thousands of boys getting important training on the athletic field. I have seen them learn honestly and fair play, and I’ ve seen them learn to subordinatethemselves for the benefit of their team. What is more important, I’ve seen them take the lessons they have learned here into the situations they’ve had to face in later life. Many of the boysI’ve helped to teach have become outstanding members of their communities.

So I’ve tried to develop a way of thinking that sees life, and the things I do, as a whole,with every act relating to anther set. This puts things in true perspective.
